The Governing Council is the governing body of UCN, and has overall responsibility for the university college, and may determine all matters of university college policy except those specifically assigned to the Learning Council by the UCN Act.  The UCN Act, which was approved in June 2004 is the provincial legislation governing the University College of the North.

The Governing Council confirms:

  • their only employee is the President of UCN
  • the Council members undertake the responsibility to govern the UCN
  • the President is entrusted with the responsibility to manage the UCN
  • By-laws and policies will be in place to support policy governance

The Governing Council's style of governing emphasizes values, vision, empowerment of the Council, faculty, and staff; and its strategic ability to lead leaders.

The Governing Council will govern with a strategic perspective demonstrating commitment to the Seven Sacred Teachings: Truth; Wisdom; Honesty; Humility; Courage; Love; and Respect.

The Learning Council is responsible for the academic policy of the university college.  The Council of Elders promote an environment at the university college that respects and embraces Aboriginal and northern cultures and values.  Both the Learning Council and the Council of Elders have representation on the Governing Council.
